Hi there,

I am a Bush Regenerator from Brisbane, QLD. I have worked extensively, including in remote areas implementing regeneration and revegetation projects. I am currently living in Tamworth and seeking both volunteer and paid employment in the field of bush regeneration (not farm weed spraying). I would love to assist the HiCUB Team and gain further work experience.

Thanks

I would like to discuss the possibility that the partner councils - Armidale Dumaresq, Guyra, Uralla, Walcha - be included under the list of HICUB PARTNERS on the right hand side of this home web page, and that these link to the websites of those councils.
Please feel free to email or telephone me 6770 3870.
Yours sincerely,

Walcha has been busy over the summer. Planting work on the levees is almost done after two months of work, including volunteer working bees. Visiting the site now, you would see diggers and trucks busy completing the earthworks.
The project manager, Nic Cobcroft, says that he is "very happy with the progress so far". After many delays due to some extreme wet weather Nic says he's "relieved that there has been some dry weather to make this possible."
The earthworks are about 1/3 of the way through the digging process. This work in the riverbed has shown it to be fairly shallow, with much bed rock.
Spoil from the earthworks is being taken to the Presbyterian Church, where pines were removed last year. Each truckload to the site carries about 10 tonnes of dirt.
Within the next month replanting of the disturbed areas will start, including wetland and riparian species.

We have had a few events at Black Gully, behind NERAM, where there have been some old breaking-down willows removed and replaced with native riverine species, The last event for the project is on Sunday 27th at 9am with a celebration lunch to follow. Amazingly, NERAM has a sculpture workshop the same day and will probably use some of the willow logs.

Take a walk along the Creeklands and see the fantastic plantings. This month is a busy one with the Bowling Club and New England Solar having done plantings and EcoLogical and Community Mutual yet to plant their sites. In December the Bowling Club will finish their site and Sport UNE will do a big planting near Niagara St. A Community planting is planned for mid- December at Cook’s Rd.

Nic Cobcroft had a wonderful day with SRC students from Uralla Central School when he introduced them to bushcare on Mt Mutton. The kids learnt about helping native plants survive and thrive through removing weeds and the importance of picking up after dogs. The kids pulled weeds then planted some trees and shrubs and had a great time then morning tea before walking back to school. Hopefully we now have some aware bushcarers in the making.

School students from Guyra Central and St Mary of Angels planted over 400 trees and shrubs beside the creek along Baldersleigh Rd in Guyra this month and had a great day.
The ground was hard, but Mick Jarochowitz augered some holes, Guyra Council provided a water tanker and it poured the next day – sounds like a successful planting. Ellen and Bec Smith put in a huge day helping the kids.
The community planting at the Scout hall which followed was a lot easier and a small group planted 100 in no time at all.
School children will again put in their energy to plant shrubs and grasses at Ben Lomond’s Bushy Park and a big day is planned for Urandangie planting on December 5th with students from Guyra Central and some small primary schools
Next effort for Guyra is 26th November when 2000 trees will be planted by Bowling and Golf Club members on the prepared site at the Golf Course. Starting time is 9am with a barbecue lunch to follow.

Progress in Walcha has been slow, with all sorts of hiccups – including enough rain to hold up works in the river itself, but finally some planting has been done on the top of the levee. At a well-advertised community planting, there were some enthusiastic Landcarers – Cherie and George Pethard and Caroline Street as well as a few local walkers and a visitor from Perth who is a Lion. A team from TAFE’s Rural Skills were a fantastic help.
A thousand grasses and shrubs were planted into the prepared jute-matted areas and should look fantastic when grown. It was a glorious sunny day and whilst other parts of the tablelands had storms, Walcha had missed out so Nic and Bevis Hoy watered everything.
We hope to have another planting before Christmas, probably a sociable twilight event to allow working people to take part. Keep a look out for the date.

There was keen interest from the eight people who attended the IM workshop in Guyra last weekend. Stories of sightings abounded. This pest IS roosting and breeding around Guyra and the group was receptive to the idea of trapping, encouraging others to find out all about the bird and perhaps begin a monitoring program. There was a request for articles to go in the local paper to spread the word, particularly seeing as Guyra residents generally appreciate their native birds and enjoy creating habitat to increase numbers.
